Manifest destiny...Does it still apply to us?

Interesting article by Barnett discussing how he feels America is still in expansionist stage. http://www.thomaspmbarnett.com/weblog/2007/12/two_more_reasons_why_the_55th.html

I agree that America needs to grow but I think our future is north, not south. As global warming begins to affect us to a greater extent we will not only see rising sea levels. We will see the breadbasket move progressively northward into the Canadian provinces. What are now desolate timberlands will be the most fertile areas for growing foodstuffs on this continent. Also, as these lands open up there will be a rush for minerals and mining on a new scale. Canada will be our Siberia (if Canadians agree of course! Its in our best interests to make it worth their while to agree sooner rather than later) as we find ourselves back in a competition with a resurgent Russia, an opportunistic China, a loosely confederated South America (the real outcome of Chavez I think) with other nations choosing their alliances from among those four hubs.

Also, as hydrocarbons get scarcer, the US and Canada will need to join forces and stand firm to thwart a Russia grab for the Arctic and its undeveloped resources. I think either this or global warming would be the catalyst that brings both parties together. But first America needs to get its act together and become an attractive bridegroom if it is to woo the Canadians to the altar. What must she do?

Change is the only constant.

I've neglected some things lately and this blog has been one of them. I have decided that in the spirit of today to make this a blog about where I see us going as a country and as a people, what resources we need to get there and what changes we need to see take place. I hope people will join me and lets get started!
